Saltwater fishing gear is not just the fishing rod that you normally see fishing enthusiasts tote around especially when they are preparing to leave for their weekend fishing out at sea. There are other important parts of the set which you cannot do without, like the flies and the fish lures that attract the fish to bite. These are the baiting parts of your equipment that you use, either as surface flies or the subsurface type.

The former type of flies are not as effective in catching fish because the float around the surface of the water and may not be noticed right away by the fish. But it does happen that a fish will leap out of the water to bite at this kind of fly and many sports fishing hobbyists have the thrill of their lives when incidents like this happen. It also shows that indeed there are many fishes below the water, perhaps an entire school of them. This encourages the fisher to shift to the use of his subsurface flies for a better chance of catching plenty of fish in this particular area of the fishing grounds.

The subsurface type of fly, because it has some weight, sinks and floats around below the sea water surface. This subsurface fly normally is shaped to imitate the movements of smaller fish types like the finger mullet, shrimps and crabs. These are what the bigger fish look for as their food. To ensure that they are seen by the big fishes that you hope to bag, these subsurface flies are painted in bright colors that will not miss getting the notice of the big fishes.

The use of either type of surface fly will depend also on the depth of the water in the fishing ground – the surface type is for the shallower waters where trout abound. In the deeper waters (where the fish types are also bigger) it is better to use the subsurface flies. When you fish in deeper waters be sure also that your fishing rod and the fishing line are strong enough to withstand the weights of the bigger fishes. If you do not prepare strong fishing gear for deep water fishing you can end up frustrated when the biters somehow are able to cut the lines and your friends will always tease you on that fish that got away. You have nothing to boast about in the fellowship with your fishing buddies; simply because you did not have the right type of fishing gear when you ventured out in the deeper waters.

So, when you first look around for the fishing gear that you plan to buy, consider first where you intend to go fishing – will it be in shallow waters, or out in the deeper areas?  This will be a factor that will determine the right type of fishing gear that you should get. Going out to fish with the wrong type of fishing gear would be like going out to battle with the wrong type of weapon. And if you have the wrong types of fishing accessories, like the fishing flies that you use, the same results will ensue – you could return to shore empty-handed.

When you are lucky to have a big fish bite your subsurface fly out in deep waters, remember too that the effort to bring in your catch to the boat will practically be a big fight between you and the fish. So, your fishing rod must be strong enough to withstand the battle. The big fish will not just allow you to reel him in easily, because he is fighting for his life. But you are also determined to get him, because your buddies will blame you for not fighting hard enough for the broiled fish they expect you to treat them to when you end your fishing day in your beer fellowships.
